SubC Imagings has introduced an H.265 update for its signature Rayfin camera. The H.265 (HEVC) encoding update is a major advancement that can reduce bandwidth by over 50% while delivering better video image quality.

The introduction of H.265 encoding significantly mitigates the common challenge of limited bandwidth on ROV systems, allowing users to capture and transmit high-quality video with greater efficiency. This upgrade enhances video clarity and offers the flexibility to switch between H.264 and H.265 codecs within the software, all while maintaining low latency.

What is H.265 (HEVC) Encoding?

H.265, also known as High-Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), is a modern video compression standard designed to provide better video quality at half the bit rate of its predecessor, H.264. This efficiency is achieved through advanced compression techniques that reduce file sizes while maintaining or even improving video quality. H.265 offers several key benefits over H.264:

Improved Video Quality

With better compression algorithms, H.265 delivers clearer, more detailed video at the same bit-rate as H.264.

Reduced Bandwidth Consumption

H.265 requires significantly less bandwidth to transmit video of the same quality as H.264, making it ideal for applications where bandwidth is limited.

Versatility

H.265's efficient compression makes it suitable for a wide range of applications, from high-resolution streaming to storage in environments with limited capacity.

Why Is H.265 Important for Offshore Visual Inspections and Surveys?

Offshore visual inspections and surveys are vital for ensuring the safety and integrity of subsea structures, pipelines, and equipment, and for supporting marine and oceanographic research. High-quality video is essential for detecting potential issues and conducting thorough inspections and surveys. However, these operations often face the challenge of being carried out in environments where bandwidth is limited.

The integration of H.265 in the Rayfin camera promises substantial benefits:
